The growth in popularity of basketball in Australia continues to rise, none more so than right here in Glenmore Park. Glenmore Park Basketball Club have just completed their largest season in more than 10 years!
The 2022/23 Summer Season saw 290 players registered with the local club, making up 36 teams that competed in the Penrith and Districts Basketball Association Competition. They had teams in every age group except one, with teams playing in almost every division of these age groups.
There were highlights a plenty for the sprawling club, with players representing the purple, gold, and whites well.
Of the 36 teams that competed, 17 teams made the Semi-Finals, 7 made the Grand Finals and 4 teams were Grand Final winners.
Combine that with a number of their players making representative teams, including Deacon Petersen being selected in the Samoan National Basketball Team that competed in the Oceania Championships in Guam, and they have had a lot of highlights this past season.
“The Winter Competition recommenced late last month, on the 22nd and 23rd of April. We still have some availability in some teams for the upcoming season, which looks to be nearly as large as the last one. Feel free to reach out to us if you’re interested to see if we have availability” explained Kathleen Burke, Club Secretary of Glenmore Park Basketball Club.
An exciting milestone awaits, with planning currently underway for the club’s Silver Anniversary at the end of the year.
“Stay tuned as we are hoping to mark this achievement with a special event” she smiled.
The club has seen first-hand the boom of the sport, growing from 12 teams just 4 years ago to where they are today.
“It’s an exciting time to be part of basketball. With the success of the Sydney Kings winning their second consecutive championship this past couple of months, to the number of Australian born players playing internationally, especially in the NBA in the US. Even our own local team, the Penrith Panthers Basketball Association being granted an NBL1 franchise that just recently tipped off their inaugural season” Kathleen stated.
“Basketball locally and globally is growing rapidly, and there has never been a better time to be part of the fun, excitement and exhilaration of our game” she ended.
