Emu Plains student Josie Mazurkiewicz has created Good Things For Good Reasons, a concept to help those less fortunate than herself. The idea involves selling eggs laid by her chickens to raise money for charity.
Josie has two ex-battery hens from Hen Rescue NSW that produce the eggs that she sells. The money that she makes is split three ways – towards a charity of her choice, caring for the chickens and to Josie for her hard work.
“During COVID lockdown in 2021, Josie noticed that there were people who didn’t have homes to isolate in and had nowhere to go. We had discussions around how many homeless people have to ask for money to buy food because they are unable to work” said Amanda Mazurkiewicz, Josie’s Mum to the Emu and Leonay Gazette.
“Josie decided that for her 8th birthday, she wanted to share her good fortune and raise money to donate to a local charity. So, she set up a COVID-safe table with an honesty jar in the front yard on her birthday and we put a post on Facebook letting the community know that they could buy fresh eggs, fresh oranges or make donations for one day” she continued.
At the end of the day, the selfless local donated $115 to Mama Lana’s and inspired others in the community to make donations.
“Projects like this help to bring out the best in people and raise money to support people who need homes, food and other things that we have” Amanda explained.
With plans to expand on the project, Josie is hoping to sell oranges from their tree and other vegetables that they might be able to grow when they are in season.
“If we had more space, Josie would love to have more chickens” she smiled.
The community can get involved with Good Things For Good Reasons by buying eggs and oranges when they’re available.
“People can either donate, or sell at a reduced cost, any other home-grown products that they would like to add to our list. This could include more eggs, honey or fruit and vegetables, so that we can raise more money for local charities.
And, of course, they can also donate to charities such as Mama Lana’s to help others in need” ended Amanda.
